As we all stay so busy in our day-to-day lives, it’s very simple to operate on the “out of sight, out of mind” philosophy. Unfortunately the homeless pets who fill up animal shelters across the country typically fall into that category.
As some of you know, I have spent time volunteering at the Arizona Humane Society, lending my dog walking expertise to the lonely pets who are in dire need of companionship, in hopes of finding of a warm and loving home.
This past December, I was looking for a way I could contribute even more to these animals. It’s such a lonely scene at the shelter. Some pets seem depressed or even hopeless, as people come and go without even taking the time to pet them, much less considering bringing them home.
I decided to help out by bringing donations and spreading the word. Everyday I travel to the homes of our clients. I mentioned that I was collecting donation items (used towels, blankets, toys, sheets), anything the shelter could use to help these little guys and gals. I made it very simple. People who wanted to donate could simply set the items outside of their home, call or email me to schedule a pick-up time, and I would pick-up and drop off at the shelter.
WOW!!!
People came through very generously, and I can’t thank them enough. It was a great way to get rid of old items, and donate them to a great cause almost effortlessly.
It seemed almost everyday I was making a trip for another pick-up. I had so many people I didn’t even know calling every week asking where they could drop things off. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Anyone who has ever rescued a pet from an animal shelter can testify that it is one of the best experiences possible. I believe that wholeheartedly! If you are unable to adopt a pet, the next best thing you can do for them is ANYTHING!
My friend Lyndee from Spectrum Labs in Tempe (vetallergy.com – Helping diagnose and treat pet allergies to provide a better quality of life), really came up BIG for our cause. The Spectrum employees spent time collecting many goods for the shelter pets. Their donations alone filled my entire vehicle! (Pics below)
I can’t thank everyone enough for their pet-loving generosity, and I will be doing this again soon.
Thank you all!
