It’s perfectly acceptable to ask for help when you need it. Being a great pet parent surely isn’t easy. Believe me, I know. We recently adopted another dog to join our loving family, and I know how much work the transition can be. Also, because I help pet owners for a living. Yep, I am a pet sitter.
This is almost the year 2012. Pet sitters are not such a novelty concept any longer. Now, for most pet owners, we are actually a necessity.
Pets require so much in order to live a long, healthy and happy life. In this day and age, it’s nearly impossible for the pet parent to raise the kids all alone.
We as a society are taught to work, work, work. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we do stay busy. And taking care of our pet-kids can be an enormous task. As a pet sitter, we do so much that we are often considered pet nannies. This can be true because clients use us for a variety of reasons. Some just for traveling, whether vacation or business, but others need us on a more regular basis. For some, we are actually their “pet care assistants.” We are the go-to for anything and everything pet related. Whether it be the actual pet sitting, dog walking, pet taxi, trip to the dog park/groomer/veterinarian, etc. We often are needed to do the overnights, where we stay over and sleep with the pets. We are needed to administer the medications to make sure the pets are healthy and happy. Most of us who are professionals are also certified. Therefore, we can help with the training as well.
Benefits of a pet sitter include:
Pets remain in their safe, secure environment where all smells, sights and sounds are familiar. Not exposed to the stresses, illnesses of other animals, or the dangers of a kennel or boarding facility.
Pets are allowed to follow their customary diet and exercise routine while also receiving playtime and personal attention.
You are not inconvenienced by transporting your pets.
Your home is looked after as well while pet sitters provide crime-deterrent services.
You can leave home worry-free, knowing your pet is in the care of an experienced and qualified professional (No inconvenienced friends, neighbors or relatives).
You can return home any time of the day to find your healthy, happy pet awaiting your return.
As a professional pet sitter, it is great to have our hard work recognized. Recently, Emmy Award winning actor Peter Dinklage thanked his pet sitter during his acceptance speech.
It is great to know the importance of and the difference we make in people’s lives.
If considering a pet sitter, make sure to ask questions. Pet sitters should be licensed, bonded, insured and most importantly, certified. Certifications should include pet first-aid, behavior and nutrition. Remember, you are hiring a professional. Not a friend, neighbor or relative. Definitely DO NOT trust your home and pets to anyone who doesn’t pet sit full time, for a living. They are responsible for two of the most important things in your life: your Pets and your Home.
As with any other service based businesses. Places like Craigslist are covered with people who think they are qualified to be trusted with the responsibility of your pets. Just because someone can post an ad on Craigslist, doesn’t mean they are qualified to pet sit, or to have pet sitter’s insurance.
Make sure to discuss their insurance. You need to know what their insurance will cover in case of any accidents. After all, you are hiring a professional. Right?
Thanks for caring!
