The Holidays are known by many as that wonderful time of the year when family and friends come together to celebrate life and show thanks.  For most of us, the Holidays are a very important time in our lives.  Maybe the most important time of the year.

They give us something to look forward to and to get excited about all year long.  Many great things are often associated with the Holidays.  Everything from Turkey and Football to gifts, seeing loved ones, decorations, winter vacations, etc.

For pet sitters, the holidays are the busiest time of the year.  We have clients who use us for many reasons.  Whether they travel for business or pleasure, or they work long hours and use us for daily dog walking or mid-day relief visits…  But during the holidays…  Almost all of them will need us.

The holiday rush tends to start in early November.  Some people travel before the actual holiday in order to avoid the enormous hassle often experienced with holiday travel.  The rush usually lasts until the second week of January, when others are wrapping up their winter vacations.

Here are a few helpful tips to help pet owners plan for the Holidays:

Remember, it’s NEVER too early to book your pet care dates.  We do have to operate on a ‘first-come-first-serve‘ basis.  We only have enough able bodies to go around, so please book your dates as soon as possible.  We do have some clients who book an entire year in advance.

Check your vet records.  Before you become overwhelmed with all of the holiday arrangements, make sure your pets are up to date on all of their vaccines.  If your pet is on medication, make sure they have enough to last until your return.  We definitely don’t want them to run out while you’re away.  Some vet offices close or change their hours of operation during the holidays.  It’s important to make sure this is taken care of before you leave.

Trust your pet sitter.  Remember, professional pet sitters do this for a living.  We know the ins and outs of our job, and we will ALWAYS have you, your pets and your home as our first priority.  Professional pet sitters should be licensed, bonded, insured and certified in pet first aid in the case any emergency should arise.  If you aren’t using a professional, find one.  Try using the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) http://www.petsitters.org/
