The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found through a new study that compared to other diets, raw pet food was most likely to be contaminated with disease-causing bacteria.
Pet owners who feed their pets a raw-based food diet are now being warned by the FDA that their pets may be at a greater risk for infections.
After a two-year study conducted by the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), more than 1,000 samples of pet food were screened. Of those, 15 tested positive for Salmonella, and 32 tested positive for Listeria. 196 commercial dog and cat foods were sampled for the study, purchased from a variety of manufactures.
The FDA says the best way to prevent infection is to avoid feeding pets a raw diet. The raw diet puts not only the pets at risk, but also the owners, and pet sitters who handle the food as well.
