How “Special” is your pet?

Having grown up in a rural part of the Midwest, I spent my entire life taking care of animals.  Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, goats, chickens…  I can even remember having a gerbil, a hamster, a few squirrels, a raccoon, an iguana, and several fish.  Anyway…  I never thought of them as a challenge.  I never had a “How to” manual either.  I just loved all of them dearly.  I did my best to learn as much as I could about each animal, so I could help care for them to the best of my ability.  Many years later, I completed a thorough, Four month training course, becoming certified to care for everything from horses to hermit crabs.

Even after I started our pet care company, Absolute Pet Care, I didn’t realize how many ‘special’ pets we actually cared for.  We just do the best we can to make sure all pets are happy and healthy.  After a client brought to my attention how we are ‘lifesavers’ for hand feeding her sick dog each meal while she was out of town, I realized just how many ‘special’ pets we care for on a regular basis.

Out of the hundreds of our pet sitting clients, many require special attention.  Many of them need to be hand-fed, spoon-fed, medicated, carried outside because they can’t walk, carried up and down stairs, slept and cuddled with at night because of anxiety, etc.  We have many pets who are blind, deaf, missing limbs, recovering from surgery, etc.  We have a couple of dogs who need to be pulled in a cart on their walks, because they do not have legs.

Not once have I ever thought of them as being “Special Needs.”  I just thought they needed to be cared for as any other pet.  They all need food, water, and love.  I’m very thankful we get to do that for them.  We definitely don’t discriminate.  Whatever they need, we happily provide.

Do you have a “Special” pet?

What are some of the struggles you’ve experienced?

How has your pet sitter helped you?

Please provide any and all feedback.

Thanks for caring!
