Urgent Pet Food Recall Alert:

The FDA is alerting consumers that Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. is recalling at least nine lots of its Sportmix pet food products due to potentially fatal levels of Aflatoxin.

The FDA is aware there has been at least 28 deaths and 8 illnesses in dogs which had eaten the recalled products. The investigation is currently ongoing, and may result in additional products recalled, as new information becomes available.

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus. At high levels, it can cause illness and death in pets. The toxin can be present even without visible mold.

Pets with Aflatoxin poisoning may experience symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting, sluggishness, jaundice and/or diarrhea.

In some cases, toxicity can cause long term liver issues or death. It is possible for some pets to suffer liver issues while showing no symptoms.

If your pets have consumed this product, it would be best to consult your veterinarian; especially if your pet shows any symptoms of illness.

Pet owners should stop using this product immediately, and contact the FDA to report any complaints relating to the recalled product.
